Maple Syrup Map: January 5, 2009
Smellings on a Monday night (into Tuesday morning)
This map identifies the reported locations of a maple syrup smell in NYC. It uses distributed, unverified reports of odors that could be used in conjunction with a windrose map to estimate the emission source. Building downwash and wind directions would cause problems in estimating exactly where an odor came from.
This system could be expanded to allow reports of odors or visible emissions from anywhere in the world. With enough data points the larger sources would become apparent, and could be automatically tracked.
